Flint Chocolate

Creative Copy // Manifesto

Tania Lincoln founded her bean-to-bar chocolate brand Flint Chocolate (on pause) on the notion of celebrating ritual, Mother Earth and those who work that land. The objective for this project was to realise a brand tone that bridged creating a universe that people can feel a part of or want to feel part of, without diminishing the untold narrative of slavery and unethical sourcing issues that plague the industry.

MANIFESTO

Flint Chocolate as a concept is passionately rooted in sustainability, ethics and craft. All handmade in a small factory in Auckland, Flint Chocolate is made from bean to bar, preferring the slower, more traditional stone-grinding method. We are passionate about making delicious chocolate from quality, sustainable ingredients with minimal planetary impact.

In envisaging a world where chocolate is considered a health move, we hope to inspire a shift in the perception of chocolate and how its consumed. Quality cacao that has been thoughtfully grown and minimally processed has many benefits—taking care of yourself and the environment. Each single-origin cacao has a diverse ecosystem of climate, soils, and human processes, contributing to intriguing flavour profiles.

Each square reclaims dessert without refined sugars, is entirely plant-based, and champions the powers of nature.

We are proud to work alongside our partners, who have shifted away from petrochemical plastic packaging or are in the process of doing so. Change can be challenging, so if you have taken a look around our website and would like more details or pricing information, get in touch at [email protected]. We know that we can have a nation that is more about composting and less landfilling.

With the government fast-tracking a new landfill site to burn 365,000 tonnes of waste annually, rejecting a ban on plastic waste exports and abandoning the remaining waste policies, businesses must take responsibilty for what they put out into the world, at a minimum, selecting packaging materials that work towards plastic pollution reduction.

Failing to address plastic production will only lead to dependence on flawed and insufficient waste management strategies. At the link in our bio, we are discussing the Plastic Pollution Treaty, what it hopes to achieve and how in Australia, a comprehensive waste reform is taking shape.

SAMPLE 02.
Do you believe business can be done better? We do. As we begin settling into 2025, we’re committed more than ever to working with businesses of all sizes to reduce their reliance on petrochemical plastic packaging.

EcoRoll

Creative Copy

For EcoRoll, a toilet paper brand that was a response to an industry that required an update, this work established a comprehensive verbal identity around a single product. Reflected in the choice of 100% certified FSC® bamboo, stringent third-party testing, and the avoidance of plastic, the brand tone pushes back against toilet humour, truthfully communicating the impacts of conventional toilet paper while accommodating themes of ritual and self-care that align with the truthful product offering. This refreshed brand language creates opportunities for encouraging people to make connections between the everyday products they’re buying and the impact it has on their bodies and the planet.

BLOG POST SAMPLE

Can you think of a more sensitive body area that you’d like to keep chemical-free? The decisions we make in the bathroom, made daily and often over time, have profound impacts on our bodies and health. Established in 1992, the TPCH Model Legislation aimed at restricting the sum of four intentionally introduced heavy metals into consumer products, including lead, cadmium, mercury and chromium VI (the worst kind), to no more than 100 parts per million (ppm).

EcoRoll toilet paper is tested by Société Générale de Surveillance SA (SGS), an independent lab, in accordance with the Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse (TPCH) Model. These tests include lead, cadmium, mercury, and chromium because these heavy metals can be harmful to human and environmental health.

— Lead—linked to developmental issues, especially in children
— Cadmium—can build up in the body and affect the kidneys
— Mercury—toxic to the nervous system and harmful to wildlife
— Chromium VI—a skin irritant and carcinogen

In 2021 (our most recent certification is dated 2023), the US TPCH issued an update to its Model Legislation. The revised Model Legislation included:

— An expanded list of regulated chemicals to include (ortho) phthalates and perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) — as you have seen, we talk about the no intentionally added PFAS confirmed by SGS
— Adds new processes and criteria for identifying and regulating additional chemicals of high concern in packaging
— Provides a new definition for ‘Post-consumer recycled material’

Third-party lab verification ensures that our toilet paper does not contain this range of potentially harmful heavy metal residues. While the quantities of these chemicals in any single roll of toilet paper are very small, over a year, a lifetime, there is repeated exposure and potentially harm that is often and easily overlooked.

What would it mean to make toilet paper that considered our environment and also what was best for our bodies?

🎋 It would mean that the raw materials used to make the paper were sustainable, using 100% FSC® certified bamboo, nothing else.

📦 It would mean that the toilet paper was free of many of the chemicals conventionally used to increase bleach or increase wet strength—chemicals that we know irritate the skin.

🧻 It would mean that the toilet paper was packaged and distributed without the use of single-use plastic.

🌎 It would mean a commitment to our future, to responsible manufacturing. It would mean being a Toitū climate positive organisation

💛 It would mean no use of animal products. We don’t use animal derived chemistry. Some paper products such as facial tissues and toilet paper are made with heavy-duty adhesives and wet-strength additives (binding agents) based on gelatin, stearic acid and stearic acid derivatives (animal fat in origin).

Bamboo is one of the most prolific sources of biomass in the world. It is a resilient plant with rapid growth and a high capacity for carbon dioxide uptake, estimated to be similar to or even larger than that of fast-growing timber plantations. Bamboo harvesting occurs between 120 and 150 days (the growth cycle), and at its peak, bamboo grows at a rate of 1 metre per day.

According to Forestry Corporation, the approximate harvest age over the past five years for the following trees typically used to manufacture toilet paper is as follows: Pinus radiata 29.1 years, Douglas-fir 40 years and Eucalyptus 21 years. This is why we choose 100% FSC® certified bamboo. It’s super soft, durable, and rapidly renewable.

It can be easy to get discouraged by the scale of our waste and climate issues, but there are very real solutions available to us. The foods we choose to eat, how we power our homes or get to work, and the products we use in our homes, including our toilet paper, can all have, over time, a hugely positive impact in many ways on our carbon footprint, our air quality, water quality, our health. Common

Tone of Voice

In 2019, founder Charli Cox began dressing individuals experiencing financial hardship and often homelessness through retail pop-ups in community spaces. It was not until three years into establishing Common that a collaborative partnership was initiated, which saw us infuse a distinct sense of community and responsibility into the brand language. Taking a departure from conventional tones further required removing words from the brand vocabulary and implementing new standards for communicating impact that would be necessary in shifting certain norms and biases. This verbal identity is applied through the website copy, partner and external stakeholder communications, impact reporting and pitch decks. This work remains ongoing.

While Dean Sproull’s chai line is a representation and appreciation of culture and tradition, the brand was not resonating with a younger audience who would consider the whole foods approach today revelatory. Increasingly stocked in a wide range of speciality cafes, Dean required a complete refresh of the brand’s verbal language that would celebrate Dean’s eclecticism and values of ethics, quality and craft. (h1) How to make chai tea
Description: I have prepared a lot of chai. And yes, the milk is important, like for use in coffee but different. Milk, both the cow and non-cow kind, are a mixture of water; protein; fat and sugar and other vitamins, minerals, and salts. Scientifically, milk is referred to as an “emulsified colloid of liquid butterfat globules, dispersed within a water-based solution”. Plant and animal milk have several chemical differences, and concisely, this means that you should begin reading your labels. This is not eccentric, and seeking milk with a 3% to 4% fat content is vital. Same percentage requirements for protein—this simply means stable foam structure, providing body and an ideal mouthfeel and improved drinking pleasure.

(h2) Organic un-homogenised dairy milk for chai
Milk such as cow, goat and buffalo milk are ancient ingredients and have been a part of Indian culture for thousands of years. I recommend organic—for the earth, for you. It’s low human intervention. Those that pair well with our chai are Goat, Buffalo, Horse and Camel.

(h2) Organic plant-based milk for Chai
In past times when you would be fortunate to find perhaps soy and rice milk in the supermarket—quite popular in the early 2000s, today the situation is quite different. Modern advancements have more recently provided us with barista milk designed for coffee, featuring a higher protein content with less fat. Here we achieve quality foam with the flavours of the chai more prominent—not the dairy milk fats.

Many of these daily milk alternatives feature a more modest lactose content, and since chai pairs well with sweeteners, I recommend the addition of coconut sugar and the practice of balance in one’s life. In general, seek out plant-based milk with the fat and protein requirements noted earlier. Results vary and are brand dependent.

With milk
To prepare hot chai, place your milk in a pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to between 42 – 46 degrees Celsius, simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.

Your chai can be prepared and then chilled. Your iced chai can keep for as long as your milk remains fresh.

MANIFESTO

ASC Architects strives for an architecture that meets diverse community needs and supports social cohesion to positively intensify our experience of the world. Buildings have an immediate responsibility to culture and society, and our mission as architects is to develop alongside the complexities of an ever-changing world.

If we are to make an impact beyond design, architecture must be prized for its service, looking forward at contemporary ways of enhancing modern life. Our design expertise is underpinned by collaborative leaders who span sectors and disciplines to deliver practical and purposeful design, each project, the result of dialogue between the client, design team and site.

Presenting our collaborators with an honest view of our ideas and architecture, these ideas become the narrative for a building to relate to the contemporary conditions in which it exists. With an intent focus on innovative building techniques and design solutions, the practice seeks to proactively position its work at this intersection of utility and function with respect for the inherent and unique complexities of each project.

ASC Architects is a multi-award-winning architecture and design studio based in Auckland. The work of the practice explores vital ideas of landscape, connections and materiality, seeking to enhance and challenge the experience of our built environment. We have undertaken and realised work across a diverse range of sectors, from private residential to large-scale commercial and community projects recognised by various awards. Collaborating with designers, engineers, and manufacturers, we take a humanistic approach to achieve client-specific outcomes that are responsive to context, economic, technical, and environmental challenges.

SAMPLE 02.
Working with sensitivity and restraint, the studio’s residential portfolio is diverse, ranging from the delivery of community housing to the development of more complex apartment buildings. Our built environments shape every aspect of our lives, and our work is to improve and enhance modern life. Projects such as Parnell House, for which we received the House of the Year Silver Award in 2015, and the recently completed Risland Meadowbank offer urban sanctuaries with a heightened consideration for the changing family unit.

The studio was engaged in master planning for the Kew Residential Services site, which resulted in the studio designing the award-winning Lakeside West apartments. Building on an existing portfolio of medium-density residential projects, the studio is engaged with Housing New Zealand, signalling ambitions for public housing. To serve such initiatives, the studio undertook the renewal of Talbot Park Community Housing, a multi-award-winning project.

Subsequent redevelopment of Valiant Street involved replacing 17 existing houses with 34 modern single and duplex units within the same site, providing quality accessible community housing. The studio continues to accept residential projects of both public and private nature.

SAMPLE 03.
Acknowledging the site’s former life as the DYC Vinegar factory, Vinegar Lane and the Cider building is an urban mixed-use development project spanning 13,200 square metres. Conceived as part of a larger master plan concerned with the regeneration of a city block in Ponsonby Auckland, Countdown Ponsonby was the first retailer to open, the modernist supermarket encompasses a 4000 square metre space with an additional 8,000 square metres of office across three floors and four levels of car parks.

By resisting the status quo of all glass office blocks clad in raw concrete, quartz zinc and evergreen glass, the materiality allowed this project to negotiate between the historic neighbourhood comprised of terraced houses while referencing the sites’ industrial origins.

Working with sensitivity and restraint, the $120 million precinct contains a carefully planned mix of 31 commercial and residential buildings with clearly defined urban design expectations aligned with the Auckland plan. Built upon fee simple titles, this project offers an example of ways to repurpose buildings for contemporary living, achieving density while retaining the quality of our built heritage.

If you know, you know (and you’re back ordering more), these are the best vegan donuts in Auckland. Ideal for sharing (or not), we won’t judge. Serve as is or warm them up in your oven—they’re perfect either way.
